Using social networking sites to build exposure for ones business and then build communities is a great strategy which can result in some really strong long term benefits. It’s little wonder you’ll find a large percentage of fortune 500 companies along with small to mid-sized businesses actively working on Twitter, creating Facebook fan pages, Linkedin groups, uploading YouTube videos and encouraging employees to blog on blogger and other hosted blogging engines. It makes a lot of sense at the earlier stages of social networking and media efforts to start building communities on these sites as each of them is a massive marketplace within themselves. As the social networking program of a company matures, it’s likely to find small pitfalls in this approach of building and interacting with their communities. Why?

Hosted solutions apart, would a company like to build a customer database in another organizations premises? No! A company’s customer database is treated like a closely guarded asset of the company. It has a financial value attached to it as something which can generate future revenue for the business. Is an online community any different? A well developed online community to which you can send out messages to and communicate with is also an asset and also has the same revenue generation potential. Why is it alright to have those scattered around different websites where a business can only have limited control over their administration and very little control over how long they have access to it. What if a company’s 30,000 strong Facebook fan page was to be blocked by a change of policy?

Perhaps it has very little to do with a conscious decision by a company. Building communities on these sites has a clear advantage in terms of popularity and existing traffic already on those sites. To build a similar network independently could take a lot more effort and time but on the bright side, the company has complete administrative control over what it has built over time and it can’t be easily taken away as it may be possible on other websites.

Despite the effort involved, consolidating a business scattered online social network communities into their own website is an angle worth looking at in the long term. Using a social networking software platform such as communifire makes building all the features of a social networking website into a business website simple. What needs to be addressed is how to redirect those very users from other sites and provide them an incentive to keep the same activity levels on the business website.

Despite the difficulties, as the business value of social networking is maturing rapidly, the need to be able to protect valuable communities built on these networks will also grow. The need to have greater control over them than social networking sites allow becomes an important issue. Building these social networks around a business website and consolidating their online audiences will most likely be an important strategy. After all… doesn’t it make good business sense?

Remember those days not too long ago when we used to stay on the edge of our seats in anticipation of the next processor that would roll out of Intel or AMD that would make the last generation of pc’s and laptops look like snails? Or when storage companies would launch the next drive that would seem so huge that we would wonder if we could ever fill them up? Moore’s law has reigned supreme in 1965 and the prediction that the number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years is remarkable. Till more recent times that is. Gordon Moore is probably surprised to see how difficult it’s become to keep at that rate in recent times, in which chip manufactures are hitting a slowdown of sorts. We’ve always depended on hardware advances to carry us through the huge growth in information that has become so much a part of our everyday lives — and now many believe we’ll have to turn some of that focus towards the software.

Social software in particular seems to be going through much of the same path as hardware did in the earlier days and at the same mind boggling speed. The need to have a virtual “space” or software that aids in collaboration has been around much longer than most would believe. As long back as the 1940’s with the Memex as Christopher Allen’s insightful article “Tracing the Evolution of Social Software” points out. According to the article:

“A memex is a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory.”

Since then we’ve seen hypertext, information exchange, groupware, business suites, forums, discussion boards, web portals, blogs, and the social networking sites that almost every one of us is on today. Through every phase from the start, what has been consistent is the growing number of users that have adopted these technologies with every passing year and the immense growth in the volume of content and information that is exchanged and consumed through this software. Considering that Facebook had crossed 100 million users last year, and then taking into account how many of these users use the platform for over an hour a day, the amount of data the software has to support is immense by any standard. What’s interesting to note is that it’s not just social networking sites like Facebook that need to keep up with the growing demand. Businesses all over the world, with employee strengths ranging from a few hundred to tens and hundreds of thousands are relying on social software for their business communication and collaboration infrastructure — and the information being exchanged is growing rapidly every year.

Now, considering that the hardware technology is not growing at the rate that Moore was confident will continue through the end of time, a lot of emphasis will fall upon the developers of social software to carry us through the evolution of information exchange, amidst the hardware, that will soon seem to become a limiting factor. All this is well and good on a macro view, but how does all this affect the average social software buyer or user?

When we buy or decide to use social software for our businesses, many of us tend to make decisions that fulfill our current requirements, ignoring the trend at which our information needs are advancing — and ignoring how Moore’s law also applies to social software. We tend to forget that although a particular software works well now, it may have to be customized and tweaked to support what’s expected of it along the way and into the future. All of the large scale social networks have been overhauled and modified considerably from time to time to scale with the growth — and the same applies to even the smaller networks.

Service-oriented architecture, or SOA, which software platforms like our own Communifire is based on, is seeing an increased support among developers who understand the need to leave room for enhancements and new components to be added on in the future. Back in 2005, InfoWorld published an article titled” IBM exec: Impending death of Moore’s Law calls for software development changes,” where the company emphasized SOA and said:

“Continuing with IBM’s SOA push, Booch introduced a demo of “SOA Integration Framework,” which is intended to provide for a set of services at the developer’s disposal when building an SOA. Still a research project and not an actual product, the framework generates a WSDL for a service and allows the developer to search for appropriate business components.”

While we continue to use social software we need to learn from its evolution, and remember — even software can become obsolete quickly. It’s important to think ahead and consider the factors that offer you room to scale in the future. Users will continue to grow; usage of social software is also going to continue to grow, as is the immense volume of information that will need to be handled.

Is your social software up to the task?

While business websites and portals created using social networking software platforms are known to have the “community” and “collaboration” as key objectives, there is one other “C” which is just as important and objective to keep in mind.

Social Networking Business Portals Are Just As Much About Consolidation As They Are About Collaboration

While business websites and portals created using social networking software platforms are known to have the “community” and “collaboration” as key objectives, there is one other “C” which is just as important and objective to keep in mind. “Consolidation“. Consolidation of people like customers, prospective customers, and employees towards a single online location rather than have them scattered across different websites. Then you have consolidation of communication channels which again is usually done through several websites and applications. Lastly, consolidation of content which is just as good a reason to consider social networking-like business portals.

The amount of content that we absorb, go through and refer to online is immense as compared what it was even three to four years ago. The social media and social networking revolution has fueled this increase in content by making it easier for users to publish their own content, communicate online, create discussions, develop learning material, and search through previous communications and so on. In a single working day, the need to access content online could drive you through several websites and applications. From having a conversation on Skype with a colleague, logging into your business email account to check mail, then moving over to LinkedIn to check for messages and new group discussions, to posting project updates on an online project management software before checking your favorite blogs for new posts. From there you could login to PollDaddy.com to set up a poll which would help you get some research stats for a an online meeting with your customers on WebEx but you also need to check your local company intranet to confirm if there is any update on the team meeting which may end up clashing with the customer meeting. It’s too much content spread across too many places! INFORMATION OVERLOAD.

Sure you have RSS readers and single sign on tools, but there is only so much they can do. There are just too many different websites to login to and keep a tab on in our every day working lives. All these websites enable better communication, provide good content or improve collaboration — but the fact that they are at different locations online brings about some level of inefficiency with it. It’s tedious. When a business uses a social networking or social business collaboration software platform to build a more unified portal it can help do away with some of these inefficiencies. Perhaps it’s not possible to avoid visiting multiple sites to get different things done. A business portal that combines forums, wikis, groups, blogs, instant messaging, polls, membership, and single sign on to “bring them under one roof” helps to consolidate the people we need to interact with, the communication channels we need, as well as the content we need to access during the working day — and that can make life easier. Believe me, it does.

Social networking for business portals are just as much about consolidating everything into a single location as it is about collaboration and communication.

Soon after social networking sites started to mushroom across the web, entrepreneurs started connecting the dots around the application for businesses and professionals. That was the birth of business networking sites.

Soon after social networking sites started to mushroom across the web, entrepreneurs started connecting the dots around the application for businesses and professionals. That was the birth of business networking sites. There’s Xing, Plaxo, Biznik, Konnects, Ryze and several others but few of them ever picked up popularity in the business circles the the way LinkedIn did. With 40 million plus users and at least 10 million plus daily active users, there is a certain charm to LinkedIn which makes it so addictive to interact on every day. You can log in, connect with others you’ve come across during your professional life, trade recommendations, send messages, and create forums, start discussions, post articles and share content. There is a lot to do and everything mimics things professionals in the real world enjoy doing. Setting up an interactive environment is bound to drive activity around a website.

Most business websites on the other hand are a bit….well…. drab. Sure, you’ll find great design, a corporate look and feel, professional images and photos but do they have the charm or ability to engage a visitor and keep him/her on the website or make them return regularly? Professionals may be impressed by great design and stunning photos but these are not hooks to pull back a visitor daily. Take a few lessons from LinkedIn.

Other than the basic social networking software framework and ability to connect with other users, the groups are perhaps one of the most attractive features. The ability to create a group around a business or area of interest, create discussions and comment are one of the core features of LinkedIn. The more recent ability to link an RSS feed to a group and share blog posts and articles is another great way to keep users on the site as the content is more dynamic. The need to come back and check updates is created by these features. Video and photo sharing is the next step made possible by LinkedIn applications and although this may not be the core reason people like LinkedIn, it adds to the channels of keeping them engaged.

Going back to the non interactive corporate business websites, they could use a makeover and come across as more interactive. Social networking software platforms like Communifire can easily be integrated into an existing business website and enable features like the groups, discussions, commenting, RSS, blogging and practically create that LinkedIn functionality to a business website. While the goal may not be to get to 40 million users for a business website, creating a smaller community will go a long way in keeping activity on the website and keeping visitors coming back for more. Could your business website use a bit more charm?

Mimicking Real World Business Collaboration Needs – Linkedin Launches Subgroups

LinkedIn groups have been among the most active online business groups and collaboration platforms with over 30,000 groups created over time. Clearly one of the best features the social networking for business professionals offers, the LinkedIn groups have been a popular place for millions of business professionals to come together, discuss, collaborate and share providing a great resource to its members. It looks like the groups may just get better.

LinkedIn announced the introduction of subgroups which can be created under the thousands of main groups created. This was a response to a popular suggestion from its users who have been suggesting the introduction of subgroups for some time but what is interesting is the real world comparison of this feature. In an email which went out to the members, LinkedIn says:

“We’re happy to announce that later this week we are launching a long-requested feature for group managers: the ability to create subgroups. Subgroups are like a break- out session at a conference. They enable you to create more focused areas than in the main group.”

Also, by creating and inviting members into subgroups, you can now send additional weekly Announcement emails to focused audiences.

It’s good to see some more aspects of real world business collaboration situations being applied to the improvement of digital business collaboration platforms like the online groups. The ability to address a smaller section of an overall group like in the conference situation is something that does happen in many situations and being able to do the same online would perhaps bring online groups a step closer to how people would interact offline. On the flip side, I wonder if this will fragment larger groups and perhaps isolate some of its members as more activity happens within subgroups. We will just have to wait and see how things pan out over time.

For now it’s a welcome change and perhaps the forerunner to other social networking for business software platforms that will also keep a close eye on it and decide to implement this feature into upcoming versions. Anything in the direction of improving software to encourage more collaboration is a step in the right direction.

Emergence of Internet has brought up tremendous change in the way people do business. It has made buying and selling of products and services possible at the luxury and comfort of the home. Moreover, we can say that the Internet has made the world a small virtual marketplace which is easily and instantly accessible.

As a result of the easy availability of the Internet , the process of doing businesses online through website is flourishing day-by-day. Everybody is trying their best to become a leader in their domain and there is an intense competition online.

In such a situation, it is imperative for any established company or startup to have a website that is unique, a masterpiece in itself, with features that are highly usable, attractive and search engine-friendly. Hence, a thorough planning and implementation of available resources is needed for the development of the website in order to make your online business dream a success.

Here the question arises, how can a business portal become a masterpiece? The answer is very simple, i.e., approaching a website design and development firm that has several years of experience in website design and development, and have professionals who are innovative and conversant with contemporary business trends and imaginative about the future growth and business turn around.

A website needs the professional touch of designers, programmers, web content writers and search engine optimizers in order to make the website available to web traffic and hold them for long. In the process, users can visit each page, understand your business practice and become potential buyers.

In order to retain visitors, your website must contain those factors which urge them to explore your site in more detail. Here, programmers come in handy, as they can make easy navigation throughout the site with plenty of useful features, and designers can use effective colors that touch the visitors’ emotion and help generate goodwill and curiosity on services that you provide.

Similarly, web content writers can describe your business process in detail, using major keywords that better describe your business. Search engine optimizers do on-page and off-page optimization to make your website compatible for major search engines.

People do have the misconception that only large businesses should have top-notch websites, but the strategy of developing a good website implies to both large and small businesses. Until and unless people know about your online existence you cannot expect business growth in whatever measures it is.

Therefore, rigorous research on website development firms is needed in advance, that can give you a perfect portal worth your investment. This can be done by looking at companies’ portfolio, testimonials and contacting people who have taken their services before.

As the Internet marketing is becoming more popular, a good and appealing website has become a priority. But, doing business online is not a child’s play; it needs hard work, and ample amount of patience and endurance. In order to sustain in today’s competitive marketplace, it is necessary that you should allow web experts to handle your business portfolio so that you can have an appealing website that can translate your business dreams into reality.

It is absolutely necessary that your website must create the environment of trust otherwise, most of your efforts will be wasted. Have you ever thought – how to create the environment of trust for a website? Don’t be panic, it’s very easy to build trust for your online visitors.

As you already know that – you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Building trust for your online visitors cannot be achieved by just a single action. Trust is achieved by many little actions you do throughout your website and when it’s taken together, give users a sense of stability, honesty and legitimacy for your business and services you provide.

If you want to know how your site ranks (in terms of building trust online), then visit: http://www.infotrex.com/siterank and know yourself, where your site is ranking.

Another good or bad news is that only few website owners focus on building trust in the minds of their visitors. So, if you do it well, it can become a real and sustainable competitive advantage for your business and you can keep your competitors away.

Here are 40 simple actions you can take to get started:

1. Your website design is the first impression. Make sure it is professional and relevant to the subject matter.

2. Navigation must be intuitive. If visitors can’t find what they are looking for easily, they will question your competence in providing what they want.

3. Make the website personal by giving it its own tone and voice. People buy people.

4. Follow the HEART rule of creating online content. (Reminder: HEART stands for Honest, Exclusive, Accurate, Relevant and Timely.)

5. Use language that is appropriate to the audience. It will build empathy.

6. Regularly add new content to your site. It shows that the business is alive and kicking.

7. Review all links. Doubts will quickly form in your visitors’ minds if links don’t work or, worse still, take them to error pages.

8. Good grammar and spelling matter. Errors give the impression of sloppiness and carelessness.

9. Don’t make outrageous and unbelievable claims, like “Read this blog and you’ll be a millionaire by the end of the week.” People are used to scams, get-rich-quick schemes and rip-offs.

10. Publish REAL testimonials and third-party endorsements. Try to always use real names and link to websites where possible. Some sites show images of letters sent by happy customers.

11. Publish case studies about customers you have helped, who use your product, etc.

12. Don’t put down, curse or insult competitors. It’s unprofessional. It is better to offer an objective comparison of competitive services or products.

13. Focus on building your long-term reputation, not on making quick sales.

14. Write articles for humans, not search engines.

15. Make your ‘About Us’ page personal and comprehensive. It plays an important part in making visitors feel comfortable that real people are behind the site.

16. Publish your photo or the photos of the key people involved with the site. Again, this reinforces the fact that there are real people behind the screenshots.

17. Clearly identify who is behind the site. Nothing creates more suspicion than a site that tries to hide the identity of its publishers.

18. On the ‘Contact Us’ page, provide an email form, telephone number, fax and address of the company. In Europe, it is a legal requirement for sites taking funds, but even sites driven by advertising will benefit from openness.

19. Provide a telephone number that people can call and talk to a person.

20. Provide Web addresses linked to the website domain, not addresses from free webmail services such as Hotmail and Gmail.

21. Think carefully about reciprocal links. If your site is about organic food and you have links to Party Poker, people are going to question your integrity.

22. Think carefully about the adverts you display on your site. Ensure that they are relevant to your subject and audience.

23. Write and publish your privacy policy. Be clear about what you will and will not do with any personal data you collect. State that you adhere to all data protection laws. Make it easy to read and don’t use legal gobbledygook.

24. Write and publish a security policy. State what measures you take to ensure that all transactions are secure as well as how well you handle customers data.

25. Ensure that you have a security and privacy policy which is linked from the footer on every page. Make the link more prominent on all the order pages.

26. Clearly publish your guarantee. I would recommend making it a 100% money-back guarantee if possible.

27. Clearly state your refund and returns policy.

28. If you use PayPal, put the PayPal logo on your site. If you have a merchant services account with a major bank like Citibank or HSBC, put its logo on your site.

29. Use Google search on your site for two reasons. First, it is a great search solution which will help your visitors find what they are looking for. Second, having the Google name on your site instills trust.

30. If there are well-known industry associations for your subject, join up and put their logos on your site.

31. Have a forum on your site and respond quickly to questions. Have the attitude that you are happy to help others without receiving immediate reward. As the old saying goes, ‘Givers always gain.’

32. Allow people to comment on articles. Interactivity and an exchange of views build community and a sense of involvement.

33. If people provide constructive criticism or comments in the forum, don’t delete them, but respond with your point of view.

34. Use the words ’secure website’ whenever you try to get any information from visitors, including newsletter sign-ups, forum input and payment.

35. On every page, state, “We take your privacy and security very seriously.” Link the statement to the security and privacy policy.

36. If you are selling a subscription, offer a low-cost, entry-level option. This could be a one-day taster, ‘a week before billing starts’ or a monthly trial.

37. Only ask for information from customers that you really need. For example, for an email newsletter sign-up, the only information you REALLY need is an email address, so that is all you should ask for.

38. If you have pricing on your website, make it transparent. I recently went to buy a book which was advertised for $10. When I checked out, they added tax, post and packaging, and the final bill was $19.50. I didn’t buy it as I felt they had deliberately tried to mislead me.

39. Start a small newsletter of your company/services and circulate it among your clients/employees. Also, publish it on your website regularly.

40. Allow people to “unsubscribe” from your mailing list. This may sound very obvious, but I have found that many websites still don’t follow it.

To ensure that you are continually improving your trustworthiness, every time you go to a website, ask yourself whether you trust it or not. Then ask yourself why you have formed the opinion you have.

One of the most daunting tasks faced by staff is choosing the right Customer Relationship Management technology. Whether you are in the retail industry, financial, high tech, or any other industry doesn’t really matter.

One of the most daunting tasks faced by staff is choosing the right Customer Relationship Management technology. Whether you are in the retail industry, financial, high tech, or any other industry doesn’t really matter. The method of choosing the right product applies to any industry and any size business. Here are 10 steps to choosing a CRM solution for your business that will help make it successful.

Company Strategies & Goals — When you choose a CRM solution that meets your company’s specific needs there are many factors that you need to considered. Not all CRM solutions are equal, and the small to medium businesses have different demands than those a billion dollar enterprise encounters. A cellular company that has hundreds of offices around the country won’t have the same requirements as a smaller retailer with just a couple of offices. However, far too many people still fail to consider the business objective when choosing software.

Hosted Web-based or on Premise – There are pros and cons to both in-house or hosted solutions. Most would agree that hosted CRM solutions are easier to implement, readily accessible, and much securer. However, if all of your employees don’t have regular Internet access the online CRM software is not for your company.

If you have an in-house IT department that is able to support your CRM software, an on-premise solution is the way to go because this also gives you the ability to customize features specific to your business.

Budget - If your business goals have been properly defined budget needs to also be determined based on those goals. You should not base your decision on just the lowest cost because your upfront costs make up only about 30% of what your actual overall investment will be, and only make up a portion of the overall investment. Budget should include costs for customizing, integrating, maintaining, deploying, and training.

Room to Grow without Constantly Upgrading – You should have your growth strategy in place before you purchase your CRM solution. Choose a vendor that will make upgrades easier and more cost effective. This is an important part of your long term decision making.

Rapid Deployment – If you host in-house, it will take anywhere from 2 to 6 months to get your system up and running where as the average deployment of a hosted CRM solution is about 1 month. That’s a huge difference. Determine whether the length of deployment will have any impact on your business and choose accordingly.

Customize For Your Business Needs – There are many CRM software choices but you should always choose one that allows you to customize it to your business needs giving you a much smoother running system.

Ensure It Works with Existing Systems – You will have a much smoother transition if you choose a CRM solution that will work with existing systems. That’s because your employees will not have to deal with training on several new technologies . Choosing a CRM system that will pull data from your back office information can also help you better service your customers.

Choose a Vendor Based On Reputation – If you take the time to do your research and choose a vendor with a reputable reputation you will land up with a reliable product. Remember the most expensive isn’t always the best and the least isn’t always the worst but you need to do your research.

Choose An Interface That Meets Your Business Needs – You need to determine if your staff can learn the software and then use it efficiently so that productivity isn’t negatively affected. If the CRM solution you choose is too complicated staff tends to not bother to use the CRM solution because they become frustrated. Choosing wisely will avoid this.

Functionality – It is critical that the package you choose has the functionality you need. You should be able to quickly recognize if it does or doesn’t.

As with anything doing your research and shopping around will reap the benefits. Knowing what you need means you can shop right. These 10 steps to choosing your CRM Solution for your business should make a smoother transition.

But then some of the “geniuses” of them are enjoying hundreds of dollars a day from Adsense ads on their websites. What makes these webmasters different from the other kind is that they are different and they think out of the box.

The ones who have been there and done it have quite some useful tips to help those who would want to venture into this field. Some of these tips have boosted quite a lot of earnings in the past and is continuously doing so.

Here are some 5 proven ways on how best to improve your Adsense earnings:

1. Concentrating on one format of Adsense ad. The one format that worked well for the majority is the Large Rectangle (336X280). This same format have the tendency to result in higher CTR, or the click-through rates. Why choose this format out of the many you can use? Basically because the ads will look like normal web links, and people, being used to clicking on them, click these types of links. They may or may not know they are clicking on your Adsense but as long as there are clicks, then it will all be for your advantage.

2. Create a custom palette for your ads. Choose a color that will go well with the background of your site. If your site has a white background, try to use white as the color of your ad border and background. The idea to patterning the colors is to make the Adsense look like it is part of the web pages. Again, This will result to more clicks from people visiting your site.

3. Remove the Adsense from the bottom pages of your site and put them at the top. Do not try to hide your Adsense. Put them in the place where people can see them quickly. You will be amazed how the difference between Adsense locations can make when you see your earnings.

4. Maintain links to relevant websites. If you think some sites are better off than the others, put your ads there and try to maintaining and managing them. If there is already lots of Adsense put into that certain site, put yours on top of all of them. That way visitor will see your ads first upon browsing into that site.

5. Try to automate the insertion of your Adsense code into the web pages using SSI (or server side included). Ask your web administrator if your server supports SSI or not. How do you do it? Just save your Adsense code in a text file, save it as “Adsense text”, and upload it to the root directory of the web server. Then using SSI, call the code on other pages. This tip is a time saver especially for those who are using automatic page generators to generate pages on their website.

These are some of the tips that have worked well for some who want to generate hundreds and even thousands on their websites. It is important to know though that ads are displayed because it fits the interest of the people viewing them. So focusing on a specific topic should be your primary purpose because the displays will be especially targeted on a topic that persons will be viewing already.

Note also that there are many other Adsense sharing the same topic as you. It is best to think of making a good ad that will be somewhat different and unique than the ones already done. Every clickthrough that visitors make is a point for you so make every click count by making your Adsense something that people will definitely click on.

Tips given by those who have boosted their earnings are just guidelines they want to share with others. If they have somehow worked wonders to some, maybe it can work wonders for you too. Try them out into your ads and see the result it will bring.

If others have done it, there is nothing wrong trying it out for yourself.
